Poison in fur

2012-01-27

Fur is not only animal cruelty but can also be dangerous for humans: The new study commissioned by FOUR PAWS reveals that fur fashion is contaminated with poisonous chemicals.

The cruel keeping conditions for fur-bearing animals are ignored by the fur industry, or described as appropriate. Fur from animals is often advertised as a particularly “ecological and valuable product”.

In 2010, FOUR PAWS already proved that fur products are highly contaminated, but neither fur industry nor retailers did anything to reduce the health risks for humans.

Now FOUR PAWS has tested again, with alarming results: Fur products contain high concentrations of hazardous chemicals that can cause cancer, reproductive impairments, allergies, nerve damage, mucosal irritation or hormonal disorders.

FOUR PAWS and EcoAid had a number of different fur products checked for poisonous traces by an independent specialist laboratory: 35 fur collars, coats, hoods or scarves in seven European countries. International fashion labels like Gucci, Burberry or Max Mara were also represented as well as large fashion chain shops. The “Poison Report” 2011 is the most comprehensive investigation of fur garments in Europe.

The detailed “Poison Report” 2011 shows the alarming results: all tested furs contain hazardous chemicals. Aa majority of the mink, fox, and raccoon dog, seal and nutria furs are contaminated with dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde, NPE, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) or chlorinated paraffins. Legal restrictions and industrial standards are frequently exceeded.

Children’s clothing turned out to be particularly poisonous.
